Consciousness vs Instinct

 Why are some people so ready to ascribe intelligence and consciousness to AI, but not to all living creatures (i.e. consciousness as being more than just instinct)?

Totally agree. FWIW the thought was prompted by the book review The Mind of a Bee on the Astral Codex Ten substack.
