Why are some people so ready to ascribe intelligence and consciousness to AI, but not to all living creatures (i.e. consciousness as being more than just instinct)?
AI being deemed "conscious" would be regarded as evidence for the particles-up theory of consciousness, which is crucial to the materialist worldview. (I can think of ways arguing around that, even, but...) Thus, matter is fundamental, and case closed on all "woo."
The idea that consciousness is transcendent and fundamental, since it can't arguably be derived from the material evidence (so they say) can hardly be discussed in "science" or secular society these days (despite the profligate "folk" assumptions based on inherent consciousness we all generally employ in our day-to-day lives).
